RevenueSort by total revenue generated
Discount %Prioritize discounted products
TagsSort based on specific product tags (e.g., "New Arrivals", "Featured")
VendorPrioritize products by selected vendors

Example Configuration

If you set the rule order as:

  1. 1Discount % - Products with highest discount appear first
  2. 2Best Seller - Among discounted items, best-sellers rank higher
  3. 3Inventory (Push Sold Out Down) - Sold-out items move to the bottom
Result: Discounted products appear first, followed by best-sellers, while sold-out items automatically move to the bottom of each collection.

Automation & Scheduling

Depending on your plan, you can automate sorting to run periodically.

PlanFrequencyManual SortAuto Sort
FreeManual only
Silver ($19.99/mo)Every 24 hours
Gold ($49.99/mo)Every 12 hours

Enable Automation

  1. 1Go to Automation Settings
  2. 2Turn on Enable Auto-Sort
  3. 3Choose frequency (every 12 hrs or 24 hrs)
  4. 4Click Save

Manual Sorting

If automation is off, you can manually trigger sorting at any time.

Steps to Manually Sort:

  1. 1Open the desired collection from your collections list
  2. 2Click Apply Rule button
  3. 3The app will reorder products instantly in your Shopify store
Use Case: Manual sorting is useful for one-time adjustments or testing new rules before enabling automation.

Tag-Based Sorting Example

You can use Shopify product tags to customize ranking logic.

Example Workflow:

Add tags like priority-1, priority-2, priority-3 to your products

In Smart Sort, choose Tag Priority Sorting

The app will reorder products according to their priority tags

💡 Pro tip: Combine tag sorting with "Push Sold-Out Down" for the best layout and user experience.

Best Practices

Collection-Specific Rules

Create specific sorting rules per collection instead of global ones for better control and more targeted results.

Tag-Based Campaigns

Use tag-based sorting for promotional campaigns (e.g., "Black Friday", "Flash Sale", "Holiday Special").

Review Automation Logs

Review automation logs weekly to ensure all collections are updating as expected and rules are working correctly.

Test Before Going Live

Always test new rules on a small collection before applying globally to avoid unexpected results.

Troubleshooting

Sorting Didn't Apply

Cause: Collection cache not refreshed

Solution: Click "Reapply Sorting" or clear cache. If the issue persists, try manually refreshing the collection in Shopify admin.

Sold-Out Items Not Moved Down

Cause: Product inventory not updated in Shopify

Solution: Sync inventory manually in Shopify and re-sort the collection. Ensure inventory tracking is enabled for all variants.

Automation Not Running

Cause: Plan doesn't support auto sort

Solution: Upgrade to Silver or Gold plan to enable automated sorting. Free plan only supports manual sorting.

Slow Dashboard Load

Cause: Large store size (5,000+ products)

Solution: Allow up to 30 seconds for initial sync. Consider filtering collections or breaking large collections into smaller ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it affect my manual sort order in Shopify?

Yes, Smart Sort overrides the manual order based on your selected rules. If you want to preserve manual ordering for specific collections, exclude them from Smart Sort automation.

Can I exclude products from sorting?

Yes, you can exclude products by adding a no-sort tag to them. Products with this tag will maintain their current position in collections.

How often does sorting sync with Shopify?

Sync frequency depends on your plan — Free plan requires manual sorting, Silver plan syncs every 24 hours, and Gold plan syncs every 12 hours.

Does the app support Metafields or custom attributes?

Currently no, but support for Metafields sorting is planned for a future update. You can use product tags as a workaround for custom sorting logic.

Can I sort based on multiple criteria?

Yes! You can stack multiple sorting rules. For example, sort by discount first, then best seller, then push sold-out items down. Rules are applied in the order you set them.
